20 July 2017 the Hon. Kathy Lynn Simmons was appointed Attorney-General and
Minister of Legal Affairs. The Attorney General was educated in Bermuda and
overseas, receiving her Bachelor of Arts (Major in Political Science and Minor
in Sociology) from St. Mary's University in Halifax, Nova Scotia; her Bachelor
of Law degree from the University of Buckingham UK; and attended the Inns of
Court School of Law, UK for her Bar Vocational Course. The Attorney-General is
a barrister and attorney and an accredited civil and commercial mediator who
has been admitted to the Bermuda Bar and the Bar of England and Wales. She has
worked in many areas of law in general legal practice early in her career and
as Parliamentary Counsel in the Attorney-General's Chambers; Permanent Secretary
in the Ministry of Legal Affairs; Legal Consultant to the Cabinet Office,
Public Access to Information Implementation Team and Consultant Advisor and
Legislative Strategist to the Speaker and Clerk to the Legislature. The
Attorney-General has undergone extensive professional development during her
career having completed the Freedom of Information Professional Compliance
training in the UK; Strategic Leadership training via RIPA International, UK;
the Government of Bermuda Senior Management Leadership training which included
courses in Media Relations, Speech Writing, Management and Policy Development,
Financial Management, Budgeting and the Certificate in Recruitment and
Selection. She also completed the Government Legal Advisors Course at the
Institute of Advanced Legal Studies at the School of Advanced Study, University
of London. The Attorney-General is a member of the Honorable Society of Inner
Temple and the Commonwealth Association of Legislative Counsel. She is the
current Chair of the Co-parenting Mediation Counsel.
