Senator
the Honourable Owen Darrell, JP, the Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Sport, first
took office on October 27th, 2022, as the Minister responsible for the former youth,
culture and sport portfolio. About a year later, he accepted the role of
leading a newly renamed portfolio focused on uplifting our cultural, sporting,
and tourism sectors. Born and educated here in Bermuda, Minister Darrell is a
proud graduate of Harrington Sound Primary School and The Berkeley Institute. He
furthered his education at the University of Tampa, earning a Bachelor of
Science in Social Science and Secondary Education in 2002. Bringing his talents
back home, he served our youth as an educator at CedarBridge Academy and The
Berkeley Institute, culminating his educational career as Year Head at The
Berkeley Institute in 2017.
Beyond
education, Minister Darrell has significantly impacted our community through
various leadership roles. Before his ministerial appointment, he was the Senior
Advisor to the Youth Parliament for over a decade and served as the Chief of
Staff to the Premier of Bermuda. An entrepreneur at heart, he was a founding
member of Bermuda’s first digital taxi dispatching service and an Executive of
the Bermuda Taxi Owners and Operators Association, managing his own taxi business
for nearly 20 years. Minister Darrell's commitment extends to sports and
recreation, having been a former chair of the National Sports Centre and a
member of the Public Golf Course Board of Trustees. He fervently supports the
Devonshire Colts FC and the Cleveland County Cricket Club. You'll often find
him passionately cheering on our local sports teams every weekend wherever
games are being held. Above all,
Minister Darrell is a devoted father to his children, Tatum and Oliver, and
continues to inspire and energise everyone he has the opportunity to meet
during visits at various community events.
